Yusuf Al-Qibti (17th C.)

YUSUF AL-QIBTI (17th c.)

A Copt and one of the few Egyptians who had cultural contacts with Europe in modern times before Napoleon Bonaparte’s expedition and the reign of Mohammed Ali (1805-1848). He expressed his wish to Pope Urban III (1623-1644) to join the Vatican Library as a scriptor to correct the proofs printed in Greek and Arabic. In 1624-1625, Yusuf al-Qibti copied a number of Arabic manuscripts that are now preserved in the Vatican.
