A and Coptologist. He was born in Nevers. After he became interested in Egyptology, he studied under Gaston MASPERO and became an original member of the Mission archéologique française du in 1881. He was appointed assistant conservator of the Museum in 1883 and served as director of the Mission archéologique from 1886 until 1898. He died at Vannes. His items are listed in A Coptic Bibliography (Kammerer, 1950, 1969).
