Serge Sauneron (D. 1976)

SERGE (d. 1976)

A Egyptologist. He studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and received the doctorat d’etat at the Sorbonne. He was member, librarian, associate director, and finally director of the Institut français d’Archéologie orientale in Cairo from 1969 until the accident that caused his death. studied Coptic at the Institut Catholique, Paris, in 1949. From 1950, at long intervals down to 1970, he published etymologies of Coptic terms.

After his excavations of the of Isna, he published (with the collaboration of Jean Jacquet) Les Ermitages chrétiens du désert d’Esna (1972). It was on his initiative and on behalf of the Institute in Cairo that Jules Leroy undertook his work on several large Coptic monasteries, continued by Paul van Moorsel.
