SCHOLTZ, CHRISTIAN (1697-1777)

A German clergyman and Coptologist. He was a preacher at the Prussian court and engaged in Coptic studies, influenced by P. E. Jablonski, his brother-in-law. From 1746 to 1751, Scholtz corresponded about Coptic studies with Jablonski, who gave him copies of Coptic manuscripts. In addition, Scholtz studied the Coptic manuscripts of the Berlin Library.

He also owned a copy of La Croze’s Coptic Dictionary. His edition of this dictionary was published in 1775 by his pupil C. G. Woide (Kammerer, 1950, 1969, no. 289), who also published in 1778 Scholtz’s Coptic Grammar. (Kammerer, Nr. 451).
