ON THE ORIGIN OF THE WORLD (NHC II, 5; XII, 2)
A Gnostic compendium based on several sources dealing with Gnostic cosmogony, anthropogony, and eschatology. Anonymous and untitled, its current title has been editorially assigned on the basis of its content.
It shares some material in common with the Hypostasis of the Archons (NHC II, 4), probably based on a common source. Extant only in Coptic, On the Origin of the World was originally composed in Greek, probably in third-century Egypt.
