Louis Théophile Lefort (1879-1959)


A Belgian Coptologist and Orientalist. He was born at Orchimont and studied at the Jesuit College at Namur and the Petit Seminaire at Bastogne before going to the University of Louvain in 1901. Then he studied under Alfred Wiedemann at Bonn. He became professor and honorary president of the Oriental Institute of the University of Louvain; he was also director of the journal Le Muséon (cf. “Mélanges L. Th. Lefort,” Le Muséon 59, 1946), in which most of his immense output in the field of Coptic studies was published. He died at Louvain.
