An Italian Orientalist, born in Rome (1869) and died in Vancouver, Canada (1935). While young, he assembled a great library of texts and studies relating to the history of Islam and a collection of photos of Arabic historical manuscripts. Then he started the collection Annali dell’Islam (first volume in 1905, ninth and final volume in 1926; published in Rome and Milan).
His volunteering for the army in 1915 interrupted his studies, and he never resumed them. In 1924 he established the Fondazione Caetani per gli studi musulmani (still active within the Accademia dei Lincei). Three years later he left Italy, mainly for political reasons, and settled in Canada.
