FRANZ WESSELY (1860-1931)

An Austrian papyrologist. He studied at the University of Vienna. Between 1883 and 1888 he visited Paris, Leipzig, Dresden, and Berlin to study papyri. From 1883 he was an assistant in the Archduke Rainer’s collection, which in 1899 was incorporated in the Court Library, Vienna. He became privatdocent in and at the University of in 1919.

He made many contributions to papyrological literature, his two memoirs on the magical papyri (1888, 1893) being the best known. His contributions to the field of Coptic studies can be found in W. Kammerer, A Coptic Bibliography (1950, 1969).
