CARL FRANZ JOSEF WESSELY (1860-1931)

An Austrian papyrologist. He studied at the University of Vienna. Between 1883 and 1888 he visited Paris, Leipzig, Dresden, and to study Greek . From 1883 he was an assistant in the Archduke Rainer’s collection, which in 1899 was incorporated in the Court Library, Vienna. He became privatdocent in paleography and papyrology at the University of Vienna in 1919.

He made many contributions to papyrological literature, his two memoirs on the magical papyri (1888, 1893) being perhaps the best known. His contributions to the field of Coptic studies can be found in W. , A Coptic Bibliography (1950, 1969).
