Bawit in the Twenty-first Century: Bibliography 1997-2014

Since the rediscovery of the Bawit monastery in 1900, numerous investigations have covered diverse fields of research. Marie-Helene Rutschowscaya established a bibliography of the main titles, following the chronological order of publication:

  • Rutschowscaya, M.-H. 1995. “Le monastere de Baouit. Etat des publications.” In C. Fluck, L. Langener, S. , S. Schaten, and G. Wurst, eds., Divitiae Aegypti: Koptologische und verwandte Studien zu Ehren von , pp. 279—88. Wiesbaden: L. Reichert Verlag.

In the same book, Anne Boud’hors published “Papyrus de Cledat au musee du Louvre” (pp. 29—35).

Both of these scholars were working on the archaeologist Jean Cledat s unpublished archives and on Coptic texts found by him:

  • Cledat, J. 1999. Le monastere et la necropole de Baouit: Notes mises en oeuvre et editees par Dominique Benazeth et Marie-Helene Rutschowscaya, avec des contributions de Anne Boud’hors, Rene-Georges Coquin, Eliane Gaillard. Cairo: Institut fran^ais d’archeologie orientale.

This pubheation contains the archives of two campaigns (1904 and 1905), followed by chapters “Ostraca” and “Note sur les papyrus,” as well as important indexes, prepared by Anne Boud’hors with the help of Rene- Georges Coquin (these also cover previous archaeological reports from Jean Cledat, Emile Chassinat, and Charles Palanque, as well as some significant articles, listed on pp. 397-98). This important book has been reviewed twice: Bingen,J. 2000. Chronique d’Egypte 75, no. 149, pp. 201-203.

  • Clackson, S.J. 2002. Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists 39, pp. 189-204.

At the turn of the century, research and projects concerning the site were summarized in a communication:

  • Rutschowscaya, M.-H., and D. Benazeth. 1998. Fouilles de Baouit, passe, present et futur.” Ades du Symposium des fouilles coptes, Le Caire 7-9 novem- bre 1996, pp. 89-92, pls. XXIV-XXV. Cairo: Societe d’archeologie copte.

New identifications of texts, the discovery of archives, and reopening the excavation have enlarged our knowledge of the monastery, which has been revisited in two general summaries:

  • Wipszycka, E. 2009. Moines et communautes monastiques en Egypte, IVe-VIIIe siecles, pp. 143-50. Warsaw: Warsaw University.
  • Benazeth, D. Forthcoming. “Bawit.” In C. Finney and C. Noll, eds., Encyclopedia of Early Christian and . Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

A large range of specific studies has added considerably to the bibliography. The present list takes into account articles from 1997 to 2014, and also makes mention of forthcoming publications. It is organized into nine classifications, presented in chronological order: texts, artifacts in museums, topography; twentieth-century excavations; twenty-first-century excavations; monuments; sculpture; ; objects. When a book or article deals with other subjects, only the pages mentioning Bawit are given.
