APOCRYPHON OF JAMES (NHC I, 2)
A “secret book” purporting to be a letter written by James, the Lord’s brother, to a recipient whose name is lost in a lacuna. Apocryphon of James lacks a title in the manuscript; its current title has been editorially assigned to it on the basis of its content. It contains reports of teachings given by Jesus 550 days after the Resurrection to James and Peter. Apocryphon of James is a Gnostic writing of uncertain affiliation, originally composed in Greek as early as the mid-second century. Its provenience is unknown, but it could have been composed in Egypt.
